Hello from New York. I'm Chuck Todd, and this is the Chuck Todd cast.

Democrats are still digging out of the wreckage from their across-the-board defeat earlier this month.

And the party's pretty divided over what went wrong, right? Before you decide how to fix something,

you have to agree on what's wrong.

And there's some agreement,

but there's some disagreement.

There's also the actual fact that while Democrats lost,

it was actually very narrow across the board.

So it's an interesting conundrum.

I think the party finds itself in tactically. They're not really far behind

at all, but do they have a long-term messaging problem? Some are arguing, do they just need to figure

out a way to either move to the center or redefine the center for what center is? Others saying

attempts to find common ground with Republicans are what might have cost Kamala Harris in the end.

My guest today is Fas Shakira.

He's the chief political advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders.

He's the founder and executive director of a more perfect union.

And I, you know, he is going to, you may think you know exactly where he's coming from,

but the one thing I've learned about FASs is don't assume a lot of things.

He's got a good way of both representing maybe his personal political views

and then taking it off and talking about things strategically as well.

I'd like to think, like myself, a pretty good compartmentalizer,

which can come in handy in politics, can be tragic
