Summary

Let's be honest, busyness and distraction become massive barriers to feeling fully known and loved in our marriage. So when we experience uncomfortable emotions, we tend to get defensive and lead with anger. In the natural, we want to fight for our spouse's heart because healthy marriages see that which cannot be seen.

that we're fighting over, the opponents that we have in our marriage, the finances, the maybe it's

over the kids, right? Early on in our marriage, we went through so many difficulties. We had a difficult

two-year-old, a strong-willed two-year-old,

and at the time that our daughter was six weeks old, she was sleeping in 45-minute increments.

I remember seeing Christy finding her laying on the bathroom floor at 5.30 in the morning, crying

her eyes out because she had no idea how to console her own daughter. We had driven during that season 21 hours to be with my dad,

who had congestive heart failure, his heart had stopped working, and he needed surgery

to receive a heart bump. We didn't know if he was going to live. So we lived for three weeks

with my mom and my stepdad while I drove to the hospital. Not only that,

in that same season, Christy had a three-week period where she was literally on her back because

her back went out. And I'm taking care of the kids and working. We were up against everything

in that season. And I had to pay attention to what was going on deeper.

I had to pay attention.

And so during that time, I went to a leadership retreat.

And during that leadership retreat, one of the things that I learned was that great leaders
