The political cartoons are now being censored on the internet, censored by who, censored

by machines, by algorithms, by software, by computers.

They don't have a sense of humor.

They can't distinguish irony from nastiness.

Algorithms don't have a sense of humor.

Computers and software can't distinguish irony from nastiness.

That's a big story in today's New York Times headline for political cartoonists.

The irony was that Facebook didn't recognize irony.

So now that all these websites and platforms and social media are in the business of censoring,

are in the business of deciding what's politically correct and what's acceptable, what's unacceptable

since they're deciding to become publishers and act like publishers, they're taking things

down that are not nasty or mean.

They're just funny and ironic.

The difference between a real publisher and algorithmic publisher is a real publisher can

look at the cartoon, decide whether it's funny, decide whether the irony is obvious and

make a decision whether to publish something that could be interpreted as nasty or could

be interpreted as advocating violence or could be interpreted just as ironic and politically

cartoonish.

The algorithms can't do that.

Algorithms is smart, they can beat us in chess, but they're not crouch or mark, sorry,
