All right, let's do a recap of where we are and how Ezra fits in the Bible.

The Bible is a collection of small stories that together tell a much larger story.

The larger story is the entire history of our redemption,

with Jesus as the ultimate hero. So how does Ezra fit into this story? Well, the Old Testament has

five divisions. We finished the first division called the Pentateuch or Books of the Law.

These were the first five books of the Bible.

We are in the second division called the History Books, and there are 12 of these books,

and we have discussed nine of them. Now chronologically, the book of Ezra covers a span of about

100 years starting in 538 BC. Something unique about the next three books of the Bible

is that the period in history in which they take place is fascinating. The Israelites are once again

captives, but not to Egypt or Babylon. Their exile was the consequence of years of

idolatry and disobedience. The next three books, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther all take place

during the period of the Great Persian Empire. This was an empire that still ranks among the world's top five greatest empires of all time.

And the Persian Empire preserved important historical records that support the biblical timeline
