30 years ago where I'm walking now did not exist, at least not in this form.

Instead, what is here now is noted through more than a hundred small memorial signs, one of which I'm tapping.

starts after this. Our audio tour of Myrtle Beach continues in a place that really didn't exist 30 years ago.

In fact, where I'm walking now, let's see over there would have been the Washeteria.

The dining hall would have been that way.

I think the credit union is probably a few blocks that way.

The library, it might actually be where the library was.

The commissary was maybe a block that way. This was the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.

For decades, the runways that they used are still used by the Myrtle Beach International

Airport, but the base itself, where those in the Air Force lived and worked,

most of those buildings are gone. And in its place is the market common, which is where I'm walking right now.

In fact, I'm walking in front of the theater, the Grand Fourteen,

looking down there. There's Barnes & Noble, got some restaurants.

It is early in the morning, so it's pretty quiet here in the market common,

but in just a few hours, probably not even a few.

In a couple of hours, this place will be filled with people walking, shopping, eating.

So in the mid-90s, the Air Force Base was decommissioned, And over the next, I guess it was,

10 years or so, 10, 15 years,

the Air Force Base, a lot of these buildings were torn down.

Some still remain.
