And I'm Deb Bowen. And on today's show we're going to explore the mystery of crop circles.

Are they an elaborate hoax people have been creating in their spare time? Are they made by off planet beings who've somehow figured out a way to get here but can't make out how to communicate with us in a language or symbolism will actually understand?

Or are crop circles emerging from the earth away for mother earth to reach out and connect with us?

Who that's an interesting thought isn't it? I know. Wow. Okay. The answer is I don't know, but gee, let's explore some of the mystery around this phenomenon. We're not even sure when crop circles first started.

There's some evidence that points to a 17th century wood cutting that depicts the devil himself mowing a field creating the first crop circle legend around this wood cutting says that a man complained that he'd rather pay the devil to mow his field and to pay the mowing fee to his landlord.

Others say the first legitimate crop circle can be dated to 1966 in Australia. And that's unusual because we think of them as being much more European and focused, but in any case we'll come back to that.

A man in Australia told police that he saw a flying saucer rise up and away near a swampy area. When he went to investigate, he saw the saucer headmaid or crop circle like formation in the flattened reads and grass.

At this time, they weren't called crop circles, but called flying saucer nest. Love that. The crop circles we've come to recognize today began in the 1970s, primarily along the English countryside.

However, carving artwork into the landscape is an age old tradition in parts of England, chalk horses adorned the hillsides and will chire while the UK's oldest geoglyphs, the stunning bronze age, affington white horse, sits just across the border and Oxfordshire.

And I have seen that horse and that's an amazing thing. Reports of mysterious patterns appearing in wheat, barley and corn fields in the area began to circulate in the 1970s, but it was in the late 80s that the phenomenon exploded.

Circles began to appear more frequently and became far more ornate, some resembling what some people call trippy fractals, others room like hieroglyphs, other stylized animals, recalling those of the Nazca lines and Peru.

The crop circle phenomenon was considered a hoax when in 1991, Doug Bauer and Dave Chorley came forward and said they'd made these crop circles, not all of them, but some of them.

They said that one night while drinking beer in their local pub in 1978, they were talking about a recent rash of US O-sightings. Doug said, would it be interesting if we fool people into thinking that UFOs are landing in the crop fields.

Come on, let's go make our own saucer nest. They came forward 15 years later and said how they had created these crop circles using simple tools, a plank of wood, rope,

and a baseball cap fitted with a loop of wire to help them walk in a straight line. After they revealed how to make crop circles, the majority of people believed all crop circles were hoax.

Now, you know Samantha, I got a few things to say about this and maybe hold it for later, but these guys were only in one small area of England.

The crop circles were happening all over the world and I don't know if everybody kind of came up with the same idea of baseball caps and wood and ropes at the same time, but I got some real doubts that all these crop circles came from the concept of these two guys.

Me too. It just can't be there too intricate as we'll discuss in a little bit.

Absolutely. I'm excited to talk more about that.

However, this revelation also that these two guys gave that they had done this had an unintended effect in that it breathed new life into researching all crop circles since elaborate and increasingly intricate circles that appeared in Indonesia, France, America, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Israel, Australia, and New Zealand.
