Summary

Talking points: addiction, culture, history, enlightenment, Zen, purpose, non-duality The ManTalks Podcast has grown exponentially over the last couple years, so for all you newcomers, I like to release a sort of cross-section or "best of" episode to showcase what the podcast is all about—after all, I have talked to some brilliant and varied experts over the years! This time, the themes are the widest ever: addiction and enlightenment. I chose this to demonstrate my love of the scientific and the spiritual—and my constant goal to balance the two. As Albert Einstein said, science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. I hope you enjoy. So when it comes to something like addiction, you know, there's many different forms of how we define that.

0:12.2

There's many different forms of how we look at something like addiction, whether it's substance,

0:17.8

whether it's social media, whether it's pornography.

0:20.6

And we have a lot of men that come

0:21.7

into our space that are struggling with exactly that with porn addictions of various forms.

0:27.1

And I'm curious to get your take on how you define addiction. And is there a difference necessarily

0:33.4

between something like substance abuse or social media or, you know, porn or sex addiction

0:40.6

when it comes to what's happening neurologically or within the body?

0:45.3

Yeah, so there are lots of different definitions of addiction, but they all come down to

0:50.1

basically the same thing, which is the continued compulsive use of a substance or behavior

0:56.1

despite harm to self and or others. Shorthand way to remember the DSM criteria for that is

1:04.7

the three C's control, compulsion, and consequences. Another definition of addiction that I like, though,

1:13.6

that's a little unorthodox, but as relevant for the book is addiction is the things we do that we

1:19.3

lie about. Uh-huh. Okay. Can you say more about that? I feel like that almost like here my audience being

1:24.6

like, woof. It's one of those oof moments. Yeah, the things we lie about.

1:28.9

Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, you know, one of the cardinal features of addiction is this, what we call

1:35.1

the double life, where we're living our regular lives, but then on the side, we have this other

1:40.6

life that is not known to the important people in our lives. And on some level, even

1:47.6

hidden from ourselves through this process we call denial, which one of my patients said is an

1:53.5

acronym that stands for don't even know I am lying. And I love that because it really does represent

2:00.6

the ways in which we can have this divided

2:02.7

brain where we're living out certain behaviors, but not even acknowledging to ourselves
