Good evening. Once again, I'm Stephanie Ruhl and welcome to our midweek nightcap. It is day 17 of the second Trump administration, and this is what we saw today.

One of the president's very first actions in office and a key part of his immigration policy

hit a big obstacle. Another federal judge has blocked Trump's executive order to end birthright

citizenship. Also, head start child care programs say they're still unable to access federal

aid because of last week's short-lived funding freeze. Plus, thousands protested in Washington,

D.C. today after last night's news that thousands of U.S. aid workers would be laid off or on paid

leave. And as the effort to drastically shrink the federal government continues, employees have until

tomorrow to accept a buyout offer. More than 40,000 already have far lower than the number

that was expected. But we want to draw your attention to the impact of this overhaul is having

on just one department, the Justice Department today.

At the new Attorney General, Pam Bondi is swearing in, President Trump refused to commit

to an independent Department of Justice. I'm going to say it one more time. He refused to

commit to the Department of Justice being independent. This is America. It happened today.

Watch this. I think she's going to be as

impartial as you can possibly be. I know I'm supposed to say she's going to be totally impartial

with respect to Democrats. And I think she will be as impartial as a person can be. I'm not sure

if there's a possibility of totally, but she's going to be as total
