Summary

Richard Seymour returns to PTO to talk about the omicron variant and why he believes Covid19 will be a crisis of a decade, rather than years. We also talked about whether the British government will ever move beyond just vaccines and lockdowns in its pandemic response, and make a serious effort to adapt our infrastructure and health system. We also talked about the failure of the global vaccination effort, and finally we discussed the question of vaccine passports and mandatory vaccinations. All it seems obvious is that big optimism has done nothing for us so far.

0:05.7

You know, throughout the pandemic, we've been hearing repeatedly from the earliest days, actually,

0:10.2

that herd immunity was just around the corner, that, you know, we were going to,

0:16.2

if you look at how many people who've got antibodies in their bloodstream, gosh, we'll be

0:20.1

out of this in a couple of months.

0:22.5

And it was always complete bollocks.

Our friend in Sweden, Anders Tegnell, designed the Swedish model based on the priority

0:30.2

of achieving that status, made various over-optimistic claims about how many people had

0:34.9

antibodies, was consistently wrong, just as he was wrong about

0:38.8

masks and everything else. Just last month, Neil Ferguson of Sage in the United Kingdom

0:44.4

posited that, you know, a combination of infections and vaccinations had more or less

0:49.8

got us to herd immunity. Then Omicron comes. Every time somebody opens them after say this might be over,

0:58.6

they are made to look stupid pretty quickly. And I don't blame them because in a way,

1:04.5

anybody who makes any firm assertive claim, and how can we not, in this this context is going to look stupid at some point

1:12.6

because it's just so fast moving and so complex.

1:15.6

My feeling, like I say, is that we're in this probably for about a decade, and it may become less sort of severe over time,

1:24.6

and that the question is how do we adjust the infrastructure? How do we adjust the sort of

1:31.1

situation with workplaces, with schools? How do we ensure there's adequate spacing, ventilation?

1:38.2

I mean, vaccination is obviously a big part of it, but it's not going to be adequate because

1:42.7

as we're seeing, Omicron has

1:45.0

significant escape from past infection and vaccinations, meaning that we can't rely on

1:51.5

pharmaceutical interventions. We're going to have to change the infrastructure. We're going to have
