Summary

Richard Seymour returns to respond to listener's questions on the recent episode on the so-called lockdown sceptics. We talked about the leaking of former UK health secretary Matt Hancock's pandemic whatsapp messages, and whether they vindicate the arguments of lockdown critics such as Isabel Oakeshott. Amongst the other excellent questions sent in, Richard responded regarding the the widely cited Cochrane study that challenged the efficacy of mask wearing, the motivation of self described socialists who are apparently comfortable aligning themselves with the libertarian right, and also the US department of energy's recent statement on the lab leak theory of Covid19's origins.

So Richard, we're going to go through some of the questions that listeners have sent in in response to our last conversation on the lockdown skeptic literature, and in particular Toby Green's book, The COVID Consensus.

But before we do, I thought it might be good to touch upon the release by Conservative journalist Isabel Oakeshott of this trove of WhatsApp messages, a former health secretary Matt Hancock, dating from the height of the

0:22.1

pandemic. The material consists of more than 100,000 WhatsApp messages sent between Hancock

0:27.7

and various other ministers and officials, and was obtained by Oakhshott from Hancock when she

0:32.5

was ghostwriting his book, The Pandemic Diaries, The Inside Story of Britain's Battle Against COVID.

Amongst other revelations, the messages include an exchange from April 2020, in which Hancock

0:44.4

responds to recommendations from the chief medical officer, Chris Witty, that anyone going

0:49.2

into a care home should be tested for COVID. Hancock told an aide that this approach muddied the waters

0:54.9

and instead opted to test only those coming from hospital, all the while publicly claiming

1:00.5

to have thrown this protective ring around care homes. Now, Isabel Oakeshaw is firmly in the

1:06.9

lockdown skeptic camp and she clearly regards the leaks as vindication of her position,

1:11.3

and many people including some of the left lockdown skeptics we've discussed, such as Thomas

1:15.6

Fatsy, also see the leaks as buttressing their arguments. For instance, in an article for

1:20.3

unheard on these leaks, Fatsy writes, The Story exemplifies everything that was wrong in the

1:26.0

all-of-society lockdown approach.

1:28.5

We were told that it was a test of solidarity, that it was the only way to save lives and

1:33.0

protect the most vulnerable. As it turns out, it was the exact opposite of that. While the

1:37.6

government was busy keeping healthy people from leaving their homes and forcing them to get

1:41.5

tested on a regular basis, it was all but abandoning those

1:44.6

it should have protected, the elderly. And this despite the government knowing full well that

1:48.8

COVID was almost exclusively a serious threat for elderly people and those with underlying health

1:53.7

conditions. In other words, a huge number of COVID deaths, particularly in the first wave,
