What's changed is not being able to control my emotions, but being able to control my response to my emotions.  Thoughts on Breathing There are a lot of different breathing techniques. One that has helped me the most is the tried and true, just deep breaths. That is one of the easiest ones for me to remember. There is also the three-two-three breathing method. That is the type of breathing you have when you would normally be crying. It allows the intensity to get out. This is the one that I do with my children.  Suggested Resources Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle  Book: Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle Book: Atomic Habits by James Clear Book: The Gospel of an Ex-Derelict: Fight. When I blamed myself for my divorce, these intrusive thoughts felt like drowning, leading me toward self-destructive escapes. To break this cycle, it is vital to use mindfulness to interrupt the pattern before the "domino effect" drives you toward addictive behaviors to numb the pain.
