By the time she learned to measure her life in moves instead of years, the pattern had already taken hold.

It began in 1999 during a season of exhaustion so complete, it barely left room for fear. She and her husband had six children then,

with another on the way. He worked long-distance haulage, gone for days at a time, leaving her alone

in the house with the weight of routine,

school runs, meals, laundry, bedtime, layered over late pregnancy and constant vigilance.

The house itself never felt hostile in any obvious way.

It simply felt aware the kind of place where silence didn't feel empty and where being alone never quite meant

being unobserved. She dismissed that feeling at first. Fatigue had a way of inventing sensations

when there was no energy left to question them. The first incident didn't happen to her at all.

It happened to Anthony. He was 10 years old, old enough to know

when something frightened him, but not old enough to shape it into something dramatic. One afternoon,

while five of the children played outside, Anthony stayed indoors with her. He was upstairs alone.

When he came down, she knew immediately something was wrong.

His face was pale, his eyes were wet with tears he hadn't yet let fall.

When she asked what had happened, he told her simply that he'd heard a woman speak right into his ear,

close enough to feel the sound more than hear it.

He couldn't tell her what the voice said, only that it was there, and that it was gone. There was no one upstairs. She comforted him, told herself children imagine things,

told herself stress passes down in ways parents don't always see.
