Summary

Kevin McCarthy has become the first Speaker of the House ever to be ousted from the position. A group of GOP hard-liners led by Rep. Matt Gaetz orchestrated the historic vote of 216-210 that pushed McCarthy out. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C) was named speaker 'pro tempore' to serve until a new speaker is chosen. of Congress sitting in their seats, all of the viewing galleries for the public, for staff,

2:03.2

for reporters, were fooled. You had a lot of members of legislative staff,

2:07.7

sort of along the aisles as well. So the place was packed and yet remarkably quiet.

2:12.8

Fox News radio correspondent Jared Halpern was in the chamber for that crucial leadership vote.

2:19.6

There was certainly a sense of the seriousness in the history of what was unfolding here,

Grinnell. This was just the second time in the history of the House, the first time in more than

a century that they even took a vote to remove a Speaker of the House. The first time in the history

of the institution that that vote was successful. And it really afterwards, there wasn't a lot of chaos,
