Summary

Romans 2:17-29 - 17 But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; 19 and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” 25 For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26 So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code[d] and circumcision but break the law. 28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

Good morning my friends and welcome back to the morning mindset it's time for you

and for me to get our minds aligned with the truth of God we've been doing that most

0:11.9

recently by walking through the book of Romans. We are

0:15.1

in chapter 2. And the apostle Paul has just made the case for the fact that none of us as human

0:22.4

beings, no matter our religious background or cultural heritage

0:26.3

are able to please the holy God.

0:30.0

And in today's passage he's turning his attention

0:33.6

toward a particular segment of humanity,

0:37.6

a particular culture who had reason,

0:40.4

at least in their own eyes,

0:42.1

for feeling a bit superior.

0:45.4

And that culture was the Jewish culture of his day.

0:49.2

You see because the Jews are the ones who were given the Old Testament law.

0:54.8

They were the ones who were called by God to be his people.

1:00.4

And as you can see, just through those descriptions descriptions there's plenty of room there for

1:05.3

them to feel a little bit good about themselves because in essence God picked them.

1:10.9

But Paul's going to make the point today that regardless of whether you're a Jew or not a Jew

1:19.2

being in that position does not make you righteous with God. Let's read the passage. It's an

1:25.9

extended passage so we'll get into it and then we'll take away a lesson.

Paul says in verse 17 of Romans chapter 2, but if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and

boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent because you're instructed from the law.

And if you're sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
