Summary

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Evan Transue. Evan had a secret, and that secret was his mental health problems. Starting as young as five years old, Evan was experiencing full-blown panic attacks. His parents and family doctor were left with confusion about his symptoms, and as a result, these issues were unintentionally forgotten about. As time went on, his mental health issues progressed. Evan was embarrassed of what he was experiencing, so he did his best to hide his problems from friends and family (at least, whenever possible). The more he hid, the worse the problems got, and the worse the problems got, the more he tried to hide them. Eventually, Evan even used drugs and alcohol to try to cope with what he was dealing with. It was a bad cycle that he would not be able to maintain forever. During his senior year of high school, everything would change. While trying to stop abusing drugs on a daily basis, Evan "snapped" and got himself involved in an altercation that would result in him being arrested, kicked out of school, and spending his 18th birthday on house arrest. He still wouldn't admit it, but his actions made it clear to everyone around him that he was not doing well. The only person he was lying to was himself. A few months later, Evan would have what he calls his "aha" moment. This was the moment he gained a new perspective on his situation, realizing that if he never took the first initiative, things were never going to get better. Over the next several years following this decision, Evan would finally discover a resolution to his mental health issues (and his physical health issues, too)! He learned about how our modern lifestyles are greatly affecting our bodies and minds, and this is especially true for our youth. He would end up getting multiple certifications in functional and natural healthcare, and still expands on his education to this day. In this episode, Evan tells us about many different topics that affect mental health. We discuss nutrient changes to make right now, all the way to applying three key influences for your health: mindset, food, and light. In between, he explains how exercise and food sensitivities can also affect mental and overall health. Last, Evan explains what an autoimmune disease is and how those with autoimmune diseases can manage their health. The first step Evan recommends is to make sure your diet has enough high-quality protein. Vitamins are also essential, but they are also specific to each person. So, taking a test to figure out what vitamins would be most beneficial to you would be best. Otherwise, a high-quality multivitamin and getting enough B & D vitamins are a great start to cover your bases. [10:46] The Role Exercise And Movement Have In Mental Health Depression and mental illness are almost self-fulfilling prophecies. They get us to do things that worsen the depression. How do you think you're going to feel if you stop exercising and lay in bed all day? Probably not great. Well, depression encourages most people to do those exact things. Don't underestimate the fundamentals. Getting outside and moving your body, together or separately, has been found to make people feel better. Do what makes you feel better, whatever it is. [14:11] Assimilating Nutrients In The Gut Playing around with the gut when we don't know what is causing issues can be uncomfortable; it can provoke outcomes that you do not want. So, the best way to start working on your gut is to have testing done first to figure out the root of your issues. With that being said, the best test to get you started on your gut health journey is a GI map test. It uses PCR DNA testing to be able to find very specific issues. But, if testing is unavailable to you, the best way to start is to cut things out and see how the difference makes you feel. Cutting out gluten can make a huge difference, as well as taking a 60-90 day break from sugar and/or dairy. [20:27] Gut Issues? Symptoms Of A Food Sensitivity Something that makes food sensitivities so confusing is that sometimes it could take up to three days to start seeing the symptoms from a food sensitivity. One surprising symptom that may not happen with everyone is a subtle change in your heart rate 30 minutes to an hour after eating a food you are sensitive to. Another common symptom is skin issues. Food sensitivities can trigger problems like acne or even psoriasis. Headaches are also a considerable symptom that people experience when dealing with a food sensitivity. [23:37] How Does Being In Ketosis Impact Mental Health? Most people think that mental health issues are only caused by neurotransmitter imbalances. Many people have been helped by medications that lead to increased neurotransmitter production, so there is truth to that. However, Evan explains that inflammation is also a huge contributor. If the rest of your body is inflamed, it's safe to assume your brain is as well. We know that when you are in a true state of ketosis, your body will be so much less inflamed. Also, when your carbs are low, naturally, your sugars are going to be low. That will lessen the blood sugar provoked anxiety attacks or mood swings. [29:49] Applying Practical Influences: Mindset, Food, And Light If you are putting positive stuff into your brain all day and replaying it over and over, it seems practical that you're going to start getting better results. What you need to do, is make a conscious practice that every single day, I'm going to take the time, no matter how busy I am, or especially how pissed off I am, I'm going to get in that positive state. When it comes to food, you don't want to form a habit or an addiction, but some of your favorite foods that are still keto-friendly, like dark chocolate, release things that make us feel fantastic. Then, you can use that as a great food to feel a good amount of energy and still stay in keto. Lastly, light is essential for our circadian rhythm. Some things that are easy to do are to try to catch the sunrise and sunset and take breaks throughout the day to go outside and just get some light without glasses or contacts. [40:08] Can You Reverse An Autoimmune Disease? Individuals are all so different, and there are so many different autoimmune diseases that can affect people, but in general, autoimmunity is when your body's immune system is attacking itself. Evan believes that the best start when working with food and your autoimmune disease is to cut gluten. Our body sees gluten as a foreign invader and thinks that it needs to attack it. When it is doing this all day, every day, it can also start to attack foods that look similar to gluten, or worse, it can begin to attack organs like the thyroid and the brain. When it comes to whether or not it can be reversed, it probably depends on the disease and the person's situation. For Evan's autoimmune disease, Meniere's disease, eating low levels of salt dramatically impacts the effects seen from the disease. AND MUCH MORE!
