there's been a lot of debate about the term illiberal democracy. There's obvious

ways why the term makes sense when you think of somebody like Donald Trump or something like Victor Arban and Hungary or somebody like Kresseb Erdogan in Turkey.

There is something democratic about the energy. Unlike some

other far-right movements, they don't openly oppose democracy. They often have quite a bit of popular support. They try to appeal to the people's lowest

instincts. But at the same time, there's something deeply illiberal about them. They violate basic democratic norms.

They have an exclusionary conception of the people, which means that the interests and the rights of ethnic and religious minorities don't

need to be respected.
