Summary

This conversation really began in December of last year when Brian posed a question to Evan McMullin on Twitter. Now Brian and Evan sit down to continue it. Evan McMullin, who ran as an independent in the 2016 presidential election and secured 21% of the vote in Utah, shares why he ran for president, about how his time as a CIA operative and his years of mission work inform his political views, and lays out what Americans can really do under this new administration. McMullin actively speaks out against President Trump and he recently co-founded Stand Up Republic, an organization aimed at preserving traditional American principles. And you may know Evan most recently for being courageous enough to run for President of the United States

Before that, what you may not know is that Evans lived a life largely of service,

0:40.3

and it seems like every time there's a chance almost like a good version of Michael Corleone. Every time there's a chance to get something for himself, he's dragged back into service for the rest of us. And so thanks for that and thanks for being here

0:54.6

talking us today about the state of the world.

Evan, I think that experiences and the prisms through which we view those experiences, particularly

1:07.0

experiences growing up, are a lot of what make us who we are.

1:11.6

And so I want to start there because I think what you've done is so brave and challenging and rare,

1:18.8

which is to directly reach across the people who hold really different views and say there's a higher ideal to

1:24.8

which we now have to hold and we can argue about a whole bunch of that stuff later.

1:29.3

But the house is burning and so let's stop the burning and let's get out of a house and then we can

1:33.9

argue about how to rebuild it. That's right, yeah. And so what I'm wondering is

1:38.7

like how you grew up, I know you grew up in Utah on a religious family, Mormon.

1:43.5

When did you first become aware that there was a government?

1:47.4

And like, how did you think about its purpose?

1:49.1

Was there talk of civics or civic duty in your home? Well, I was just to clarify, I was born in Utah and a lot of people then assume that I was raised there, but I was actually raised in a town outside of Seattle.

2:01.0

And I, it was a, we grew up in a rural area, or I grew up in a rural area, we had a few acres
