This is CBS. I'm The World. I'm John Batchelor. I welcome Judy Dempsey, the senior scholar for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She's in Berlin and she travels Europe.

And three votes in these last days, I need Judy's help to understand. There's a very big feature in the

Financial Times, the pink paper out of London, I recommend. Three elections, one message. Europe's

Maga populists are on the rise. The three elections are Portugal, Romania, and Poland. However, this adds to a romantic

story of the rise of the populist right. Judy and I have much discussed AFD, alternative for

Deutschland, which enjoyed success in the most recent Bundestag, is now the second most numerous seating in the in the Bundestag for the coalition government of Friedrich Merritt.

It is not part of the coalition.

We have national rally in France.

We've much talked about with Marine Le Pen looking to gain seniority and superiority in the next election.

The rise of Farage's Reform Party in Britain suggests that there is also a populist movement there.

George Maloney is in charge of Italy.

Brotherhood of Italy is a populist right party. But now, Judy, a very good day to you. Romania,

Portugal, and Poland. Let us begin with the big one, Poland. The surprise, apparently, is not just in the

national election, but is in the election for the mayor of Warsaw, the rise of men who are

advocating positions that were heretofore associated with populism, right-wing populism.

This phenomenon has been noted by a number of SAS. Is it driven by the same forces?

Are we as editorialists grouping three or four things that don't

belong together? Good evening, Judy, Judy. Good evening, John. And thank you for having me on your

program. What we don't want to do is run with the hounds, run with the pack. And we have to think

out of the box and look at exactly what happened in Poland.
