Would you turn, please, to the third chapter of the gospel account of John, John

chapter 3 in verse 1. We've been on a subject for some weeks now that we're calling

eternal life, eternal life. Eternal life.

And we want to continue with that

and see something that's connected to this.

John 3.1 says there was a man

of the Pharisees named Nicodemus,

a ruler of the Jews.

Now, we're told in Jesus' day when he walked the earth in his

ministry there were two main groups of religious leaders

and thought in the Jewish community, the Pharisees and the

Sadducees.

And there were also doctors of the law.

We have doctors of divinity today, and that's some of the same concept.

But he had the most trouble with these guys, right?

These Pharisees, these Sadducees, these doctors of the law.

And it's because, I'm just paraphrasing now, he, in essence,

he told them their religion wouldn't save them and that their righteousness wasn't enough.

And it made them so mad that they became murderous towards him and eventually did kill him.

And the same is true today.
