You ever put your foot in your mouth real, real, real deep where you're hanging out with

a bunch of people, everybody's laughing, you're making fun of each other, you're making

the kind of jokes that involve giant generalizations about traffic or politics or music, the

world used to be better, but now it's stupid or maybe making fun of each other's jobs or whatever

might be. And it's all going great. Everybody's given and taken really well. You know the group really

well, staying up late at a restaurant or sitting out on the deck, listening to music. And it's like

each person chimes in and tries to one up the one before and you're playing off the laughter of the

last thing. It's just I love these kind of get-togethers. If you'll so much trust and joy and jovy

all you're just awesome. But then somebody tries a joke and they just didn't know that somebody in

the room was going to have that joke hit a little too close to home. That generalization, that subject

matter maybe touches on something that's a little sensitive for them or their family or their

history. And maybe you just didn't know, maybe you forgot. I did this the other day. Everybody's

cracking jokes. I'm getting made fun of. I'm making fun of my friends back and everybody's laughing.

And I made a big sweeping generalization joke that has truth behind it, which is what makes jokes

funny about one particular lovely profession. It's not even pretty, it's a scandalous, not anything,

it's just a joke. And everybody who didn't know that that was going to be sensitive for one

individual got a real big laugh out of it. And everybody who did know was like, oh, Matt,

if you knew, you probably wouldn't have done that one. And fortunately, we all trust each other

and like each other. And it just kind of rolled over the waterfall and we kept going. But you know

what it's like when everybody's laughing and then all the laughing kind of dries up real quick.

And people go and refill their beverages. They're like, I hang on, I got a return a quick call.

I'll be right back. And it's all your fault. I did that. I ruined the party. You know who else
