Summary

TJ from San Francisco tells his story as the closing speaker at the Living Sober Roundup held in San Francisco California in July of 2014. One of the things I found interesting about this speak was that TJ was 12 stepped by someone that had been sober only 10 days. The Living Sober Roundup is the oldest LGBTQ Roundup held in the US, and if you are interested in attending its not to too late to go this year, it is being held in person only, July 1–3 2022 and details can be found at https://livingsober.org Email: sobercast@gmail.com Support Sober Cast: https://sobercast.com/donate We have added a page of meetings that have moved online https://sobercast.com/online-meetings Sober Cast has 1900+ episodes available, visit SoberCast.com to access all the episodes where you can easily find topics or specific speakers using tags or search.

Good afternoon, everyone. My name is TJ, and I've decided that I now realize that I

0:34.6

qualify for every 12-step program imaginable. I used to actually say that I didn't qualify

0:42.1

for gamblers anonymous because I've never gambled, and then my life experience sober

0:46.9

has shown me that I did some very high-risk behavior that landed me in a really dark place,

0:52.5

and I'm going to hopefully get into that. I want to begin by offering a quote from Bill

0:57.4

Wilson. At least I'm not sure if this is actually a quote from Bill Wilson, but at an international

1:02.2

conference, I think it was 10 years ago, an old-timer said it was, and I told Lee that

1:08.2

Bill Wilson signed my big book, and she believed me for a moment, and I said, I'm actually

1:13.4

not that old, but I did do it in a way that maybe he did. I don't know. Here it is from

1:20.2

Bill Wilson. AA is not a success story, but a story of human failure transformed into

1:29.4

usefulness by the alchemy of a loving God. I want to say it again because when I heard

1:36.2

that at that conference some years back, it struck me to the core. AA is not a success

1:42.4

story, but a story of human failure transformed into usefulness by the alchemy of a loving God.

1:50.1

I'm struck by the knowing that there are thousands of ways to tell a story, and I like to

1:58.8

begin, when I talk, I like to begin by setting an intention not for anybody else but for

2:03.4

myself, and that intention is simply that I be vulnerable and authentic. I also know

2:11.2

that I don't have to give details. I don't have to give my fourth step up here. I also know

2:18.5

that it may be what I need to do in order to stay sober today. I am absolutely willing. There's
