Hello and welcome to the Explorers Podcast. Glad to have you along for what promises to be an amazing ride.

Today we are going to begin our series on one of the most well-known and most requested explorers, and that is Ernest Shackleton.

Shackleton is often cited as one of the greatest explorers of the 20th century, and that is mostly because of the extraordinary deeds and efforts that he exhibited when his ship Endurance was trapped in the ice of the Antarctic in 1915.

But I can promise you that Ernest Shackleton is a much more complex character than this now towering figure of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.

In fact, as an explorer, he has a lot to be desired, yet his deeds are almost unparalleled in the history of exploration.

So buckle up for what promises to be a great run of episodes. Let's get started with a few notes.

First, I want to point out that there is a ton of information available about Shackleton.

Books, TV shows, movies, websites, there's just a million resources out there.

With that in mind, note that what I'm going to say might not always jive with what you know or have read about Shackleton.

Again, with so much stuff about the guy available, we are bound to have some conflicting facts and opinions.

I will post on our website, ExploresPodcast.com, a list of primary resources that I have used for this series.

That way if you are wondering where I got all my info, you can just check it out for yourself.

Second thing, because there is so much information about Shackleton and this era, know that this will be a long series.

We get to really dig into the weeds of Shackleton's life, especially his endurance expedition.

Third thing, I'm going to be posting on the website some maps and photos as well as links to Shackleton related stuff.

I've even got some exclusive images of Shackleton memorabilia sent to me by a Shackleton fan, an American named Joe Lavender.

I'll post some of those on Facebook and Twitter as well. They are pretty cool.
