During the Middle Ages there were a series of wars between the Islamic and Christian powers of the time.

The Islamic forces had been successful and taking control of many areas, including the

Holy City of Jerusalem, which up to that time had historically been Jewish and the center of the Christian world.

The Third Crusade was largely devoted to trying to win back the lands lost to Saladin, a famous

and great Islamic leader.

It pitted the famous English king Richard the lion-hearted against Saladin.

Richard defeated Saladin in battle, but he refused to lay siege to Jerusalem.

The two men eventually reached a truce that gave the Christians some land along the coast in what is now Israel and Lebanon.

The Muslims retained control of Jerusalem, but agreed to allow Christians to have their pilgrimages

there.

Perhaps no other name represents the Middle Ages, more than that of King Richard, the

Lionheart.

Most of us are familiar with the tales and legends centered around Robin Hood, made Marion,

the cowardly Prince John, and of course the merry men of Sherwood Forest.

Just saying these names brings to my mind the images of all the actors and

actresses who have played them in movies and plays that I have seen in my lifetime.

But what was the true story behind those now legendary figures?
