Welcome to the Stephen King cast, one man's musings on the works of Stephen King.

Each week I'll review one entry from the collection of Stephen King and the chronological order of publication.

Today, we're going to examine the 1979 thriller, The Dead Zone.

Before we get into the summary and the review, let's examine the Dead Zone in relation to the works of Stephen King had published until that point.

Carrie focused primarily on one troubled girl in a small town.

He took the concept of the small town filled with vampires in Salem's lot, a novel that included a character battling alcoholism and a haunted house.

He then took those two concepts and explored them in depth for his third novel The Shining.

His fourth publication was a collection of short stories, but then he came back and blew the doors off the hinges

with the epic showdown of Good vs. Evil and post-apocalyptic America with the stand.

So far in this chronology, we see certain patterns emerge, like a baton handoff in a relay race.

So we saw the baton of a small town handed off from Cary to Salem's Lot,

and the batons of the writer-protagonist haunted house and alcoholism from Salon's Lot to the Shining.

But with the bridge between the Shining and the Stand and the

stand to the Dead Zone, we see him exploring new territory. Coming off the heels of the stand,

a novel with dozens of characters, just as many subplots, and in geography spanning the entire

country, the Dead Zone is an incredibly intimate novel, focusing on one man's lonely life

and a small handful of characters
