Today are listening to episode 99 and I'm talking with Catherine Switzer.

Catherine Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a registered participant in 1967.

You've probably all seen the iconic picture of her running that race and one of the race officials trying to pull her bib off of her.

Now I read Marathon Woman, her book, You Should Read It To, and I learned so much more about Catherine, who she is as a woman, what she's done for the sport of running.

I think we've all heard that she was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an official participant.

But there's so much more to her story that we don't know about, that I didn't know about.

It was so cool to hear about how she trained for that race, the obstacles that she had to hurdle to simply be a woman running in the sport.

But there was so much more to just running the races and official participants than I even knew about.

Since then Catherine has done so much for the sport of running.

I mean, the amount that she's put into not just creating events for women but creating events for the sport of running.

Since that 1967 race is pretty phenomenal.

Now Catherine ran that first marathon in four hours and twenty minutes.

But she ended up becoming quite competitive and has run a PR of 251-37.

And that was in the Boston Marathon in 1975.

She's also won the New York City Marathon in 1974 with a time of 307-29.

Now what you need to know about that race is it was extremely hot that day.

Catherine had a huge hand in the Women's Marathon becoming an Olympic event in 1984.

She's been a television commentator for years.

She has had her hand in so many pieces of women's running over the past 50 years.
