I want to take a few minutes of your time and just talk about leadership and today I want to just kind of define you know what is leadership and maybe what's more important is what isn't leadership so in the world we live in today a lot of folks will say well I want to be a leader because I want to control the way people are working and be able to tell them what to do and that's that's what being a leader means to me I get to to Lord over those people and put my thumb up

1:00.0

and keep them headed in the direction that I think is important what I would say is that's probably diametrically opposed to what I believe so when I think about a leader I think of somebody that's going to inspire others to follow them so what does that imply if you're going to be inspired to follow me that means I should probably be doing the job already and then you're going to jump in there and do the job right along with me or vice versa

1:29.4

I noticed that in the old history books I read, we've got our leaders leading from the front,

1:36.8

literally going into battle and leading their men across the battlefield. Now, all leadership is not

1:43.6

battlefield leadership or military leadership, but that says a lot about our leaders if they are

1:50.9

on the battlefield in front of us taking us against a prepared enemy or even not a prepared enemy.

1:57.0

We've seen current leadership in the military, higher leaders are probably not going to be on the

2:05.5

battlefield leading you into that mission. Does that mean they have to be there? No, it doesn't

2:12.4

mean that. What it means is that you may have stepped out of a leadership role more into a manager's

2:21.2

role. Now, in my book, Leadership in the Shadows, I talk about leaders versus managers, and I would

2:27.1

say this, you don't have to be in the military, you don't have to be law enforcement, you don't have

2:31.9

to be a CEO of a company, to be a leader, you can be a manager and lead in that position. Once again,

2:40.4

if you are that manager, you can set the example for those around you for them to follow, and that's

2:46.2

actually you trying to be a leader in the position that you're in. What's more important, a leader

2:53.9

or a manager? Well, I guess that depends on what the task is. A manager is somebody that's going to

3:00.0

get you everything that you need to be successful as a leader, and that manager can also then step in

3:07.2

and be in that leadership position. If you're on the battlefield and I keep referring to that because

3:12.2

I'm a military guy, that's just how I think. Managing assets on the battlefield, whose job is that?

3:21.1

Well, ultimately it's the commander's job to make sure that we have the assets that we need,

3:26.4

and that those assets are all working together to help us have mission success. So assets, they're

3:32.6

part of the team, whether it's a bird flying over and giving us ISR feed so that we can see what's
