The 8th of March is now globally recognised as International Women's Day.

Whilst many people post celebratory social media quotes,

receive or send messages of recognitions the women in their lives,

and mark this occasion positively,

there are many people who use this day to highlight

the very real issue of gender-based violence. Marches, petitions and

fundraisers are strategically scheduled on this day to bring awareness to the threats

women and girls continue to face. UK MP Jess Phillips reads the names of women who

have been killed by men in the Houses of Parliament on this day too.

There have been more names that haven't made the list, but they are deaths of women who died because of a man, but not physically.

The Domestic Homicide Project has found that more victims of domestic abuse

killed themselves than were murdered by their abuser.

I'm Naomi Channel and this is real. From April 2020 to March 23, 93, 93 deaths of women in England and Wales were ruled as suicide following domestic abuse.

The charity refuge estimate that three women a week take their own lives following domestic

abuse, but it's likely that number is higher. Women who have suffered domestic abuse are three

times more likely than their peers to attempt to take their own life, and that increases if there's

also been sexual abuse within a relationship.
