Summary

My friend Chad Call (late 30s, gay, former business/event executive, bridge builder) joins us to share his story. Chad talks about growing up in Kaysville Utah, serving a mission, being active in his YSA Ward, stepping away from the Church, coming out as gay and making his way forward. Chad talks about his supportive parents (Lisa and Jeff—Jeff was my missionary companion in England) and all they are doing to keep their family together including being on the front row of the Utah Pride Parade. This is a beautiful family love story—and an example on how to keep family relationship strong and healthy—even with people on different paths and different beliefs. Chad then talks about the Utah Pride Center—what the organization does—and how we can support them. Chad helped me better understand all the good that Utah Pride Center has done in our community and continued need role they provide. Please consider donating to Utah Pride Center (see show notes) and/or attending Utah Pride on June 6-7, 2026. Thank you Chad for being on the podcast. You are a good man and doing life-saving work in our community. Links: Utah Pride Donation: https://utahpridecenter.org/donate

Kahl, and Jeff Kull and I were the only ones that went to the England

0:22.8

Manchester mission of our district that was not the rest of everybody went different directions and

so we had this bond as we went to Manchester together and never were companions but always get

0:31.8

together on splits or something and sort of have this bond of being in the MTC together and finishing

0:36.8

up together and then we had a really of being in the MTC together and finishing up together.

And then we had a really young mission president who was in his 30s, while we were missionaries named Ellis Ivory, who's alive. I'm your dad. I'm going to talk about you in a second.

My companion and I are in our 60s right now. In 2025, we had our 45th mission

0:56.7

reunion and our mission leaders were still there. They're in their 80s and spoke. And it's just

1:01.7

kind of really cool to have them involved in our lives. And Jeff came up to me and wanted to tell

1:06.9

me about his son, Chad. And that's who's going to be on the podcast. And he says, he said, Richard, you know I have a gay son. And maybe he told me that. I forgot that. And, you know, he's the executive director of Utah Pride. And he said, I am so proud of him. And the man he is and the work he's doing. And he just wanted me to know how much he loved our guest, Chad Cole, who's now on the

1:29.0

podcast. I finally got to meet Chad in real life. Sanctuary was having a premiere here in Salt Lake City,

1:35.4

and I went with my daughter and her boyfriend and your parents, Jeff and Lisa, Call, were sitting

1:41.2

behind me and you were a part of the movie sanctuary that we've talked about

1:45.9

on this podcast before and had some wonderful remarks about Utah pride that I learned about more

1:51.8

your kind comments to trans people in the sanctuary and I can just tell your heart cares about

1:57.2

that really the vulnerable and community that's under attack. And so anyway, I reached out to

2:05.9

Chad. I think I talked to Chad at Sanctuary and said, Chad, would you come on the podcast and share

2:10.1

your story? So welcome to the podcast, Chad. Thank you. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.

2:16.7

You're making me cry for the start.
