People will sometimes ask me who my favorite pirate is, or maybe who the greatest pirate ever is, and I never

find myself able to answer that question.

It's probably because I've read too much and thought too much about pirates, but there are contenders.

Henry Avery is a contender. It's part of the reason I chose his flag for the podcast logo.

He was successful as a pirate and probably got away with it.

I like that.

But then again, he was a slave owner and was very active in the slave trade in some of the more illicit elements of it.

So yeah, that's pretty uncool.

Benjamin Hornigold is another.

He was a privateer with a code, a personal code of ethics, not just a pirate code, and I like that a lot. But he would eventually turn coat and hunt down some of his former fellows.

I like that a lot less.
