Summary

In 2014, Warriena Wright went to meet a young man she met on Tinder, in Australia's 'Surfers Paradise'. That man was Gable Tostee.

What started off as a promising night of fun, turned into a real life nightmare. The events that led to the death of 26-year-old Warriena would be heard by many, because Gable recorded a 199 minute voice recording of their time together, Warriena's death and the aftermath.

That recording would be used as evidence in one of the most controversial trials Australia has ever seen.

In almost every recent case I've covered, cases where the crime is less than 20 years old,

there is almost always a mention of the victim or perpetrator's mobile phone.

From phone data, mapping, messages and internet searches,

But in today's case, there was something sinister about what was found on the mobile

in a trial that turned into a media circus. I'm Naomi Channel and this is real. Thank you. I'm This case has been one that has stayed with me,

because it's such a sad and confusing case that I've talked about with my friends, with listeners online,

and with people I've met who work in the crime and justice industries. And 99% of the time,

1:55.3

the people I'm speaking to have never heard of this case. I've always felt like there's a lot to be learnt from the

circumstances surrounding it. And in many forums that I've read, the victim's name and her

story is sometimes buried way beneath the controversial character and the stories of the

accused. And I aim for that not to be the case

in today's episode. Warina Wright was a young woman from New Zealand and in August 2014,

the 26-year-old was visiting Australia's Gold Coast. She had taken annual leave from her workplace,

where she worked in the credit card division of a bank, to attend her friend's wedding. She had

decided to stay on for a few days after the wedding to explore the Gold Coast and checked into a motel in an area called Surfers Paradise.

Warina was striking. She had been born in the Philippines and moved to New Zealand when she was

just a year old. She and her family settled in Wellington. Her mother was a deacon at their local church,
