Summary

My friend Julie Rose joins us to talk about BYUradio’s show (and now podcast) called “Top of Mind”. It is a production that talks about tough topics (such as politics, social issues) in a nuanced, respectful way. The show is not out to change your mind—but to “lower the temperature” and model how to talk about important subjects to keep us unified as Latter-day Saints. Julie (a season journalism veteran with over has a 20+-year of work—including stints in California and Charlotte, NC) brings her thoughtful voice to “Top of Mind” to help us be curious, informed, engaged, and willing to learn. Julie also shares some of her own story as a Latter-day Saint (in her late 40s, never married, serving as the YW president in her ward) and what she does to stay engaged in the Church and what we can do to help everyone feel a sense of belonging. I am deeply moved by the efforts of Julie, and everyone involved in the “Top of Mind” podcast and encourage everyone to check it out. 0:23.2	involved in BYU Radio for quite a while. I'm Julie Rose on the podcast. Welcome to the podcast,
0:29.4	Julie. Hi. Thank you so much for having me. Julie has a, you know, when I think of a radio station
0:35.7	listeners, I just think of live programming,
0:38.0	but in the world of radio, they create podcasts now, as you may better understand than me.
0:44.7	So they will release content. It can be an ongoing podcast. There's, I think, five or six
0:49.9	podcasts connected with BYU radio that are hosted on the BYU radio app.
0:55.3	And we're going to talk about one called Top of Mind.
0:59.7	That's been a show at BYU since 2015, but now is a podcast since February of 2022.
1:06.5	Terrific podcast talking about important subjects in our faith committee.
1:10.7	And I think they have the
1:11.5	right person in Julie Rose running that show. Julie grew up in Provo. She has been drawn to this
1:19.6	space ever since her academic training and PR. She's been involved in public radio, really,
1:26.3	her whole career, including a stint in Charlotte, North Carolina, for many years connected to NPR.
1:32.3	She's probably done 10,000 at least live interviews.
1:36.5	And it's just been in this space a long time.
1:38.9	It may be a little different for Julie actually to be a guest on a show since she's done 99% of the work.
