When someone close to us dies, laying them to rest is a final act of love for their physical body.

Knowing they are at peace and being cared for can also be a big part of the grieving process.

But in today's case, the wait for a family to do that for a woman that was so loved and cared for

was as criminal as the horrific act that ended her life.

going to 47-year-old Julie Riley,

lived alone at her home in Scotland.

She was originally from Ershire, but moved to Glasgow and lived in a flat.

In 1993, she suffered an incredible loss. Her daughter Roxanne had died at the age of six months

from cot death. As if life hadn't been cruel enough, Julie also suffered a hypoxic brain injury.

She'd been in hospital for five months. The brain injury occurs when the brain doesn't receive

enough oxygen, and for Julie, it meant that she had problems with her memory,

it slowed her reactions and it affected her speech. She'd been staying in a housing facility

that helped adults with brain injuries like Julie's and she'd been doing well. But in February

2018, Julie Riley disappeared.

Julie had gone through short periods of time of not speaking to her family,

but she would always get back in touch.

She was good at attending her hospital appointments,

so when she failed to show up for one,
