When I was a brand new return missionary, I went to work at a small company that framed

and sold art prints for shops and office buildings.

Well, I had a good relationship, I think, with most of my co-workers.

I could tell that one of them, in particular, didn't take a liking to me, probably partly

because of my return missionary zeal that I exuded.

On one particular day, I was talking to him, and he suddenly turned the conversation

toward the church, expressing some pretty hostile views towards the faith.

What surprised me most wasn't that I was in a conversation with someone that had strong

biases against the church, that wasn't very new to me.

But something that he said was brand new to me, that I had never heard before.

As he was talking, he started to list all the reasons why he couldn't believe that

Joseph Smith was a true prophet.

And one of them, as best as I can remember, he said something like this, I just don't

see how you can believe someone who talks to a white salamander in the woods as a prophet

of God.

You guys, I simply had no idea what he was talking about.

I said something in return like, if we don't think that Joseph Smith talked to a white

salamander in the woods, where on earth are you getting that from?

I can't remember his exact response or mine, but today I do know where he got that story

from.
