Welcome to another great episode of the wire religion podcast.

In my position as a professor of Church History and Doctrine, I often have the blessing

to teach doctrine and covenant section 84, one of the great sections on the priesthood.

In fact, Joseph Smith's history designates section 84 as precisely that, a quote revelation

on priesthood, end of quote.

If we aren't careful when we study that section, we can misunderstand that doctrine and

covenant section 84 is a revelation on priesthood oaths and covenants, not a revelation on priesthood

offices and assignments.

In context, section 84 is a temple revelation about the relationship of the temple, the priesthood,

and the endowment of power.

Notice the promises of God's oath and covenant, as mentioned in doctrine and covenant section

84 verses 33 to 40, about becoming the seed of Abraham and the elective God and receiving

Jesus and all that the Father has, apply to all of those who receive the blessings of

the temple, men and women.

Years ago, I was teaching this very important concept to a group of Buoy's students.

But one of the students raised his hand and asked in a skeptical voice something like

this.

Has the prophet ever taught anything like that?

That this oath and covenant applies to women as well as men?

At the time, I didn't think that they had, at least not explicitly that I was aware of,
