Last time, with the Japanese landing on Guadalcanal, intending to build an airstrip,

Admiral's King and Nimitz had freedom of choice taken out of their

hands. Then again, here was an opportunity to not only strike at the enemy, something both admirals

were eager to do, but any attack here would dovetel nicely with King's desire to march up the Solomon

Islands and eventually take Rabal,

which all agreed would definitely weaken the enemy's harassment of Australia.

Now was the time to pick commanders and come up with a plan.

But there was more to this moment than commanders in a plan,

the U.S. having watched the Japanese conquer everything they

touched, with the exception of Port Moresby, seemed unstoppable. And though, yes, the Americans

desired revenge for Pearl Harbor, that does not a worthy fighting force make. No, the overall tone

of the Pacific Theater had to change, one of defense to offense.

The mentality required was vastly different. The changes would have to be systemic. One way to do this

was clear and consistent communication. The other was simply winning. Winning battles at sea,

in the air, and on the ground.

Despite the losses, that would come and that would mount.
