Admiral Fletcher, Task Force 17th commander,

staying south of Guadalcanal and thus out of range of the Japanese, hit their landed troops and ships at Touloggi, an island just above Guadalcanal. There had been two American raids

thus far, and in truth, the Americans could have done better.

But since it was still relatively early in the day, Fletcher would hit them again.
