Last time, after catching up with the Japanese victories just after Pearl Harbor,

we covered Admiral Chester Nimitz, encouraging his subcommanders to take

the fight to the enemy. Two but small confidence-building victories occurred soon after. Admiral Brown's

defense of the Lexington by shooting down several Japanese bombers attacking the carrier, and then

his attack on the enemy shipping just off Lay and Salamawa of

northeastern New Guinea. Happy with this, C&C Southwest Pacific Area, General Douglas MacArthur,

wanted the harassment to continue. Meanwhile, the Japanese South Sea detachment was planning its

next move against Port Moresby to further weaken

Australia's ability to attack New Guinea, while also then being in a position to harass any U.S. ships
