Last time, the Durham Light Infantry sought to push on from the pre-missau bridge,

which is located 12 miles south of Cantania.

Yet instead of giving more ground, the Germans decided to stay near the northern bank and give resistance.

Thus, the bridgehead established by the Durham's was minuscule, but it was a bridgehead.

Now, Monty wanted it expanded. In fact, the 8th Army

commander had come close to Premisole Bridge during July 16th, giving this order before day's end.

The 300-yard-wide and 300-yard-deep bridgehead was to be expanded, andintanaia would come under a simultaneous direct assault

via an amphibious landing. The attack plan now to expand the bridgehead would start out with the

best part of the previous attack. Starting at 1 a.m. July 17th with the 8th D.L.I holding the bridgehead

barely, the 6th and 9th DLI would cross the river

to the west of the bridge. Then turning right, they would make for Highway 114. In advance north,

a battalion on each side of the road. They were to advance about 1,000 yards beyond the bridge,
