Mary Wolston Craft was an amazing human being.

She was the mother of Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, but in her day she was far more famous than her daughter.

I do have to say, first of all, that her name is a bit ridiculous.

It's basically Mary Wall Stonecraft. I've heard of plenty of people named

Thatcher or Smith or Butcher or Baker, but never a Denise candlestick maker. Still though she's a deeply inspirational person.

First of all she was a writer and a historian, but she was also a political activist.

She lived during the French Revolution, and while she was English, she spent many years during the

Revolution in France. After seeing the reality of the Revolution, she would write an historical and moral view of the

reality of the revolution, which dealt honestly with the need for

Republican reform, but also with the brutality and the barbarism she witnessed during the terror.

In 1790, Edmund Burke, a British political theorist, wrote a treaty saw in the French Revolution

calling for the restoration of the monarchy and defending the aristocracy,

while calling for the third estate to return to what he considered their rightful place.
