The history of French colonialism and the history of piracy are entwined.

I know that probably doesn't come as a shock to anyone who has listened to this show.

Piracy seems to be a byproduct of colonialism anywhere it happens in the world.

But the French had a particularly close relationship with the pirates.

Together with the plantation system of slaves and sugar,

they braided together to undermine and destroy the Spanish Empire.

The first official French colonies in the New World, all of them in what would become

Nueva and Francaa were in North America.

All of those earliest colonies failed.

There were conflicts with indigenous tribes, there were problems with disease, and there were supply problems in getting much of the necessary

material needed to those colonists.

Basically getting ships from France to North America was difficult, and it was unreliable if you weren't using the trade winds.
