Last week we looked at major differences in how Methodists and Catholics look at the church,

what Christ means by that term, at the papacy and a church history.

But today I wanted to respond to a few particular issues that have been raised about scripture and tradition, about which books belong in the Bible, about purgatory, Mary and the Saints, and the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Marriage. This is part two of a two-part series, which I'm responding to Adam Hamilton, the

senior pastor at core, the Church of the Resurrection,

the nation's largest United Methodist Church, as well as an ex-D Dominican name Father Joe Tortoreechi.

Otherwise, let's jump in to the key doctrines that the two of them raised.

The first is about scripture.

It's about what Protestants call sola scriptura or scripture alone.

Now that's a term I think we Catholics often misunderstand.

So I want to let Adam explain in his own words.

In the Protestant Reformation, the eye, it began to feel like in the years and decades leading up to the reformation

that the tradition of the church and the teaching of the church was of paramount importance.

It was foremost. It was the most important thing from

which the church derives as doctrine. It's the church is developing doctrine, it's

sharing doctrine. Luther comes back and says, wait a minute, we need to remember that

our scriptures are foundational

document that the Bible is for us where we find the material out of which our

tradition and our doctrine develops. Now there are a lot of different ways of defining and understanding

so of Scrautora, but I think that this is the best one.
