Summary
Maud and Cesar hiked their "thorough hike" in 2001, spending more than a year on the trail. They were determined to squeeze every last experience from the Appalachian Trail, covering the nearly 2,200 miles across all four seasons.
Their dog, Trudy, joined them and turned out to be the star of their movie. I particularly liked the way in which Cesar "helped" Trudy cross a river! For trail historians, the movie contains the added bonus of an interview with trail legend, Earl Shaffer. If you'd like to see it, contact Cesar at takethefuturecamping@gmail.com, or visit www.thethoroughhikers.com.

| 0:00.0 | Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail, the ultimate midlife crisis, joined Stephen his guests every week as he staggers from Georgia to Maine. |
| 0:26.3 | Hi again and welcome back. We're at episode number five today and as promised my guests, |
| 0:34.2 | for there are two, are Maud Dillingham and Caesar Bacera. These two did not hike the trail in |
| 0:40.9 | 2014, and even though I didn't know them prior to our conversations, I gleaned from them the |
| 0:46.6 | same wonder of the trail that afflicts us all. Theirs was a very different trail in a very |
| 0:52.2 | different world back in 2001. |
| 0:55.7 | The two of them introduced me to their own concept of thorough hiking as opposed to through |
| 1:01.0 | hiking. I'll let them explain the concept but when I tell you that they spent over a year |
| 1:05.8 | on the trail you'll understand that theirs was a very special commitment indeed. In the way that these things go, |
| 1:13.2 | I ended up with a couple of interviews that were nothing like what I'd expected. I'd been hoping to |
| 1:18.4 | learn more about hiking with a dog, not that I had any intention of doing it myself, and a little |
| 1:24.0 | about the movie that they made. While we covered that, particularly in the conversation |
| 1:28.6 | with Maud, we also went in a number of different directions, for which I was extremely grateful. |
| 1:34.0 | The AT lead you along a hidden path, full of surprises, in much the same way. I initially considered |
| 1:39.7 | splitting the interviews into two separate programmes, but it seemed silly to do that when they |
| 1:44.0 | were about |
| 1:44.3 | the same hike, so this week's podcast is a little longer than usual. I should also warn you that the |
| 1:50.0 | sound quality isn't fantastic, as neither of them was able to gain access to Skype for our conversations. |
| 1:56.1 | That said, we did the best we could with my cell phone perched precariously on a bunch of books |
| 2:00.7 | right next |
| 2:01.2 | to my microphone. I bet Rush Limbaugh and Michaelson McConaish don't have to put up with this sort of |
| 2:05.7 | problem. At the time of recording this introduction, which is just a day after the previous |
