Summary

My friend Dr. Mark White (active Latter-day Saint, Director, MFT Doctoral Programs, Department of Marriage and Family Sciences, Northcentral University [NCU]) joins us to talk about a research study designed to better understand the experience of current/former LGBTQ Latter-day Saints). Dr. White is joined by the other members of the research team, Dr. Beth Patrick (Associate Professor of Marriage and Family Sciences at NCU) and Tyra Williams (PhD student in Marriage and Family Therapy). Beth (lesbian/queer identified) and Tyra (queer identified) share some of their journey and how they are navigating their faith communities with wonderful insights. All three talk about the purpose and scope of the study. If you are LGBTQ and a current/former Latter-day Saint, I encourage you to spend 30-40 minutes to complete the online research project at MyCoreTruths.org (anonymous) and please share this link with others. Good research helps us know how to better meet the needs of our LGBTQ friends. Thank you Mark, Beth and Tyra for being on the podcast and your great work. ** Please Check Out My Book At: ** Deseret Book: www.deseretbook.com/p/listen-learn-and-love-embracing-lgbtq-latter-day-saints Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/1462135773

Welcome listeners to another episode of Listen, Learn, and Love, hosted by Richard Osler.

I have three guests on my podcasts that are jointly connected on a research that project they're doing through North Central University in La Jolla, California.

0:18.2

It's an LGBTQ-focused research. I love these kind of projects because it

0:23.6

helps us to do better when we know better. And all three of these individuals are joining me via

0:29.2

Zoom. And two are faculty at North Central University, and one is a PhD student.

0:41.5

And so I'll let Dr. Mark White, who reached out to me,

0:46.5

he's a member of the church, just talk about the research that he's doing.

0:50.9

And perhaps you could also then introduce the other two guests on the podcast.

0:53.2

Certainly. Thank you.

1:02.4

So we started talking the last year, and we called the project Mike Cortreuse.

1:05.9

And just to, you know, kind of give you a little backstory.

1:10.7

I didn't have the words for it when I was a missionary, but I remember in conversations with people, they saw the world a certain way.

1:18.9

And I now call that a paradigm or a worldview.

1:22.6

And I saw it a different way.

1:25.3

And if we were able to just get on the same paradigm or worldview,

1:29.3

then everything would make sense. And one of the things I've observed over the years as

1:37.6

I've interacted with individuals who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ,

1:43.7

the Latter-day Saints, and then leave, is sometimes when that paradigm, when they leave the church, the paradigm that they have dramatically changes.

1:56.0

And it's not just they kind of switch flavors of Christianity.

2:07.7

Their whole paradigm is blown to pieces, whether there's a God or not, whether there's order in the universe, particularly see that among millennials who are leaving the church.

2:14.2

And so that, you combine that with, you know, some kind of formative pieces over my life.

2:22.8

I'm in high school right before I served a mission.
