Summary

My friend Spencer Cottle joins us to share his story as a gay Latter-day Saint. Spencer, who grew up in Williamsburg Virginia, talks about coming out in 2018 to his bishop and parents (good experience) prior to his successful mission to Madagascar. Once home from his mission, Spencer talks about needing to face and address the realities of figuring out his future as a gay Latter-day Saint. That led to deeply spiritual experience that Spencer shares on the podcast and feelings about his best path forward. Spencer, who sang in the BYU Choir at October General Conference, also talks about the excellent support he is receiving from parents, family and roommates. Thank you Spencer for being on the podcast. You are a remarkable talented man with a wonderful future. Thank you for sharing your story and helpful insights to help bring us together. 0:38.3

Only you can tell your story the way it needs to be told.

0:42.3

We're recording this in the middle of conference.

0:45.3

It's an early Sunday morning before the Sunday morning session of conference,

0:49.3

and that would be October 3rd.

0:51.3

You're listening to this podcast obviously long after conferences ended.

0:57.3

But tell our listener, Spencer, where you were Saturday night during the evening Saturday night session.

1:03.8

I sang in conference. I'm in the BYU choirs. So we performed a couple hymns last night at the Saturday evening session.

1:14.6

Just a cool, cool experience.

1:16.8

I wouldn't trade it for anything.

1:19.3

And my wife and I watched that session.

1:21.7

I remember the camera scanning to the BYU choir,

1:24.7

and I just thought there's a lot of wonderful women and men at BYU and your

1:29.0

gift of music to bring the spirit in that meeting touch both of us. It's kind of interesting,

1:34.5

but, you know, that session of conferences, our listeners may know, was canceled and then added back in.

1:40.8

I'm talking about the third session on Saturday listeners that started at six Utah time, but

1:45.8

talk about the implications of adding that in and how your choir was then involved, Spencer.
