I'd like to start today by discussing a question one of you sent me on Facebook.

One of our listeners is a teacher at a Japanese university that's doing an English

language course on piracy and they encourage their student to listen to the show.

Now first of all that's awesome and a little bit crazy, but second, one of their students

asked a question about Diego Lucifer. If you remember way back we talked

about a pirate in the mid-17th century named Diego Lucifer or Diego the

mulatto. He was a young man born in Campeche. He was refused entry into the Spanish military and instead he chose to turn pirate.

His early piratical career was centered around revenge on the Spanish in general and in particular against one man who had wronged him.

A few decades later, that same name, Diego the mulatto appears on the rolls for Henry Morgan's raid on

Panama. Now I talked about this briefly but one student wanted some clarification.

They wondered if they are the same Diego.

Is the man who sailed on Panama under Morgan the same who'd rated Campeche about 40-odd
