Hello, welcome to the Pirate History Podcast. My name is Matt. Thank you for listening. Life at sea holds far too many dangers to name. Now foremost in the minds of most that went to sea in the age of sale were storms. Storms were an ever-present danger, and ship killers frightened even the toughest seaman.

And then there was injury, certainly.

Injury on board a sailing vessel was a common everyday kind of hazard and ship's doctors were frequently just

not up to the task of saving limbs or preventing infection.

And then there were the other people on the sea.

There were pirates to be sure, or if you were at war enemy vessels. If you

happened to be a pirate or a smuggler, the Coast Guard of any nation wasn't someone you wanted

to run into. Some of my favorites though, and especially

on my mind giving Halloween coming up, were the monsters. You know, we think of the Cracken as a

myth, a sea monster out of legend, but now we know about real, giant, and colossal squid.

They're some of the largest animals on earth and they're deadly predators.

Now naturally sailors of old knew about them.

That's where the myth comes from in the first place, but there wasn't any
