Summary

This week, Sarah and Stacy tackle the topic of foster care and mental health awareness and dive deep into myths and misconceptions of families in the system. Stacy discusses her experience as a foster family, sheds like on what it’s like to work with the system, and what you can do to help these kids and their families. You can find the full show notes with links to the products and articles discussed on this episode here. It's foster care awareness month, and this topic is something very important to Stacy. She hopes that in talking about foster care, she can dispel some of the system's myths and miseducation. And let listeners know how they might be able to get involved even without becoming an official foster parent. Stacy wants listeners to understand that neither foster nor biological parents with children in foster care don't need to be demonized or stereotyped negatively. The goal of foster care is always reunification first, meaning the idea of having the child return to their biological family. Stacy adds that this doesn't always mean parent, but sometimes caregiver or guardian. Sometimes this is by the parent's choice for what is better for the child. day, but it's not just a random opposite day. Today is, I think, a tremendous opportunity

0:43.9

to tap into one of Stacey's many areas of expertise that do not overlap with mine and dive

0:51.2

deep into the topic of foster care. As Stacey, let me know, I had no idea when we talked

0:58.2

about doing this show last week that it is foster care awareness month. And I've realized

1:03.3

that even though I have actually a couple of friends, Stacey, you're not just the only

1:06.7

one who have become foster parents in the last couple of years, that I don't really know

1:11.0

very much about the foster care system. So in an effort to increase awareness and education,

1:18.1

I thought I would go on a wild ride with our listeners and we could do this together and you

1:23.3

can help educate us about this system and your experience as a foster parent. Thank you.

1:28.4

And I also hope to give insight into how it affects all of us, not just those who are

1:36.6

participating actively as a foster family or someone in the system, but also what you can do

1:44.4

if you want to be a part of it, but not necessarily ready to be, for example, a foster parent.

1:50.0

So I mean, that's already one of my questions. Right. So I hope that, you know, everyone listening

1:56.8

will feel more educated after, but also informed on how they can take action if they want to,

2:02.1

which is what we do here on the Bayley of View. I told Sarah yesterday I'm like, you just said

2:07.5

the Bayley of View. We have it in the Bayley of View in a while. Wow. That is like 50 episodes ago.

2:14.2

That's like a year ago, and I made that one for you. Wow. So this is what we do here on the whole
