Summary

This week, Stacy and Sarah look back at soaking or activating nuts and reflect on how data has impacted previous science.  You can find the full show notes with links to the products and articles discussed on this episode here. Facts are facts; science is science, and no matter how we felt about it before might change if we are open to hearing new information. Sarah adds that there was science available in previous shows that allowed us to infer some of these things. As more data has become available in the past year, we see that it's actually not the case. Episode 188, Paleo-Friendly Bread:  Episode 413: The Gut Health Benefits of Nuts Stacy reminds listeners that this isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. To make sure the science on this show, which is specific to soaking or activating nuts, isn't extrapolated into different areas. Listener question: I'm interested in getting nuts and seeds back into my diet but am wary due to my autoimmunity. I've read all the articles I can find on the subject on your website (even your dehydrator article) and ran a search. Still, there is no mention of soaking (and dehydrating) nuts and seeds to break down the enzyme inhibitors that cause digestive issues. Some nuts give me a stomach ache and bloating (I've experimented here and there with low Fodmap nuts), and I have also purchased activated nuts (that have already been soaked and dehydrated). I seem to get on fine with the activated nuts, but if you don't mention this process in your articles, is this not something you advocate? Welcome back to episode 452 of the whole view. I have a confession when Sarah told me that

0:37.3

she wanted to do this show topic. I was like, I don't want to do that. I don't want to.

0:42.7

You actually said, are you sure you want to open that can of worms?

0:48.6

What's the text? Oh my God. I think there were three texts in a row. Are you sure?

0:56.6

So here's the thing is sometimes we say things on the show that aren't popular or that we I don't like.

1:08.6

And that is the thing about facts is facts or facts, science of science and how we feel about them

1:17.6

or how we might have thought about them before might be different if we are open to hearing new information.

1:27.6

Well, and that's what this episode is. This is new information because the last, the last time we sort of talked about this, you know, the summary was, well, we don't have, you know, we don't have specific science on this, but here's related science and we can kind of infer that it would also apply here.

1:51.6

Now we have actual science showing that's not the case. And I think that's fascinating. Like I'm really excited to do a little leg.

1:59.6

Look at all the science from the last year that actually answers a question that didn't have a concrete answer before that we've all, you know, been operating on.

2:10.6

I think a informed assumption, but you know, still an educated guess. And now now we get to make choices based on evidence. And I think that's very exciting. I'm excited.

2:24.6

Yeah, that's how the text exchange went.

2:27.6

You were like, approximately, you're like, but it's science and it's exciting. And it's you.

2:33.6

I was, I was texting you while I was reading the papers and I was like, my mind was so blown by, by the results that we're going to talk about today that I, I was nerding out actively while I was texting you.

2:49.6

Yeah, I don't think you quite understand the pot that you're about to stir, but let's get into it. And I also want to just remind people that science and information is nuanced.

3:01.6

The information that we're going to share today specifically on the topic of soaking and sprouting nuts doesn't apply by logic to other things that we've talked about as soaking and sprouting.

3:15.6

Of course, if information changes, we would share that with you. But I don't want you to hear this show that is specific and extrapolate it to other things. And I'm sure Sarah, you'll get into the science of that.

3:30.6

Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sure. Let's jump in.
