Summary

Most Muslims don't need investment advice. They need help escaping debt.

In this episode of Freshly Grounded, Faisal and Kaya sit down with Shaykh Uthman Ibn Farooq for one of the most practical conversations we've had around money, modern consumerism, mortgages, credit cards, buy-now-pay-later culture and what Islam actually teaches about wealth.

This is about:
β€’ Why so many Muslims feel financially trapped
β€’ The psychology behind spending money you don't have
β€’ How social media and marketing manipulate your desires
β€’ The hidden dangers of mortgages and credit cards
β€’ What the Sahabah taught us about wealth, simplicity and freedom
β€’ The difference between needs, wants and necessities
β€’ Why living below your means is becoming a forgotten sunnah

Shaykh Uthman also shares stories from his own life β€” from driving luxury cars to living in tiny rooftop rooms while studying Islam overseas β€” and explains why some of the happiest years of his life came with the least possessions.

A conversation every Muslim family needs to hear.

I'm not, just because I get headaches from light, so I'm going to be wearing the shades.

0:04.2

And then you'll get all the comments, why is he wearing shades inside? And I'll go up further. We'll put that bit in the podcast. All right, so we've got somebody, we're super like chill. So we're on, right? We've got, Kaya is sometimes co-hosts with me and he's going to walk in at some point and join us. But I thought it would be good to let the audience know how we initially met because it's quite funny. So I was in the airport flying out and I see Sheikh Huthman's in there and I'm like, you know when you see someone, we haven't met in person, hadn't met in person at that point. And so you see someone and you see them online and you

1:12.7

Okay, that gives me the end. I said, I think we have mutuals and stuff, and then, Hamd Allah. And then we got speaking about something that I was really passionate about, which was finances. Now, I'm not passionate about finances on a public level, like, as in like, it's part of my work or anything, but I feel like it's a underserved part of the, um, Muslim, uh, space.

1:17.1

100%. And I'm not talking about. And what I kind of pitched to you when we were speaking

1:21.5

was the fact that there's so much talk in the Muslim world in terms of finances, but it's all about how to make more money, how to make money ethically, how to invest. But there's not really much out there for the layman, which is how most people are just dealing with the income that they get from their salary every month. How do you best use that? What are the rulings that I should know about that? How do I pay off my debts? What if I'm in debt that has interest? And all of these different things. So the lay Muslim, I think there's not enough information and education for them on financial literacy. And we just started talking about that for, I think, like a couple hours and loads of other different topics. And I appreciated that. But I wanted to use this episode as a way to kind of continue that conversation at some point. Pleasure to be here first off. And it's amazing how you just meet somebody at airport and then, haem the lower here. Yeah. I think you have a great point. And we've been working on this. There are products out there on information and how to invest and all that. I get it. Most of those cost a lot of money and all that kind of stuff. Also, a lot of people don't know if I invest in this halal option, if I get a loan from this Islamic bank, is it really halal?
