Welcome to episode 39 of real cool history for kids.

In our last episode, we learned the amazing story of the ghost army, a secret military unit

that helped the Allied forces win World War II.

We learned that their existence had been kept a secret for decades after the end of that

war, only coming to the light in 1996.

In this episode, we are going to learn the story of another amazing group of heroes who

were also in action during this war that nearly tore Europe apart.

These heroes didn't march into battle like the regular soldiers and they didn't create

diversions with blown up rubber tanks and carefully orchestrated soundtracks and radio

conversations like the ghost army did.

Now these heroes helped rescue art.

Now you may be thinking art, Mrs. Odell, are you joking with us?

Why in the world would art need to be saved?

And why is that so heroic?

Well my friends, I'm going to start at the beginning and tell you the story of the monuments

men, the heroes who fought to save the art.

Now I've told you a little bit about World War II.

I've told you how it all started when bad men wanted to take over Europe.

The top bad guy in that war wasn't especially evil villain named Adolf Hitler.
